Who
is this course for?
The Skills for
Life tests are designed
for adult (16+)
speakers whose home
language is not
English, who are
living or trying
to settle in England.
These ESOL learners
may include refugees
or asylum seekers,
migrant workers,
people from settled
communities, and
partners or spouses
of people who are
settled in this
country for a number
of years.
It is expected that
the learners' educational
and employment backgrounds
will be diverse,
as well as their
aspirations, literacy
levels and language
learning skills.
This diversity will
be reflected in
the range of material
selected for use
in these tests and
in the task types
which candidates
will need to complete.
How
will I benefit from
the course?
You will improve
your spoken and
written English.
Candidates will
encounter topics
in the course which
are both familiar
and relevant to
them as learners
of English. Topics
may include:
personal details/experiences,
talk to your child's
teacher
work (communicate
at your job)
education / training
housing
family and friends
health (talk and
understand your
GP)
transport (travel
in and around
London)
weather
buying goods (do
your shopping)
leisure
UK society (ask
for or give information)
What
will I achieve after
I finish the course?
When you successfully
complete the course
you will be awarded
a recognised University
of Cambridge ESOL
Skills For Life
Certificate. You
will be prepared
to progress to a
higher-level ESOL
course, apply for
other courses at
this Centre or other
colleges, and increase
your chance of finding
employment.
How
long is the course?
The course runs
for 15 weeks per
Entry level.
What
will I need to get
enrolled?
First you will have
to show proof of
your residential
status and then
fill an application
form. You will have
an initial assessment
test/ oral interview
to establish your
level of English
so that you will
be placed in the
suitable class.
What
key skills and qualifications
will I need to start?
You will need to
be able to answer
simple questions
about yourself and
understand basic
information / instruction
given to you.
How
much will it cost
me?
